Fireplace Insert Installation in Glendale

Fireplace insert installation in Glendale starts with the fireplace you already have, not the unit in the catalog. An insert sits inside your existing masonry firebox, and the fit has to be right first. Sootly Chimney Sweep checks compatibility on site, photographs the firebox and flue, and writes the findings in plain notes before you order anything. To start, request an insert estimate.

Gas, wood or electric

Our technicians check compatibility before recommending any of the three types:

  • - Gas. Needs a gas line connection, and a liner and venting.
  • Wood-burning. Low-emission models are available, and the liner and venting are part of the job.
  • Electric. The simplest to fit, with no venting or gas line.

Which is right depends on how you plan to use the fireplace, what the firebox and flue allow and what the room needs. We lay the choices out in plain words, with the trade-offs.

What the fit check involves

Before an insert is recommended, the technician looks at:

  • - The size and condition of the existing firebox
  • The flue, so the liner can be planned
  • The damper and smoke chamber
  • The crown and cap on the roof
  • Clearances around the opening

You see the photos on site. The notes state what the fireplace can take and what it cannot. If the flue needs repair before a liner goes in, the notes say that, with a separate estimate.

What sets the price

We do not print an insert price on this page, because the unit and the job vary too much for one figure. These factors move the estimate:

  • - The type of insert. Gas, wood and electric are priced differently.
  • The model. Size and features differ within each type.
  • The liner. A stainless steel liner is run in the old flue as part of the installation.
  • Venting and the gas line. For a gas insert, the gas line connection is a line of its own.
  • Flue condition. Repairs found at the fit check are added as separate lines.
  • Roof access. Tall chimneys and steep roofs need more time.

The written estimate shows each line before any unit is ordered, so you can compare it with any other quote.

Why NFPA 211 comes up

An insert changes how the fireplace vents. NFPA 211 is the standard that governs the inspection of chimneys and the installation of connectors and liners, and it is the reason a fit check and a flue look come before an install. We name it because it explains why we do not guess.

If you want the fit check before deciding, book the fireplace walkthrough and we will photograph the firebox with you.

What you receive

The estimate is a plain document. It names the insert type, the liner, the venting and the gas line if one is needed, and it lists any repair the flue needs before the install. The photos from the fit check go with it, so a second contractor or a family member can follow what you were told. Nothing is ordered until you say yes.

Glendale fireplaces

Glendale is home turf for Sootly, between the Verdugo Mountains and the 134. The homes here have brick masonry chimneys, factory-built metal flues and gas log sets. The technician photographs the crown, cap, flue and firebox, shows you each photo in the living room and writes plain notes on what needs work and what can wait.

After a quake you felt indoors, we suggest a camera look down the flue before the next fire, with the stills added to your notes. That is worth doing before a liner goes into the flue.

Choosing who installs the insert

Ask each company:

  • - Will you check that the insert fits my firebox before I order?
  • Is the liner part of the price?
  • Is the gas line connection included for a gas insert?
  • Will the estimate be in writing, with photos of what you saw?
  • What happens if the flue needs repair first?

The best companies tell you the problems before the sale, not after the unit is on a pallet in your driveway.

When an insert is not the answer

Sometimes the notes show that a different job fits better: a repair to the existing fireplace, a new cap, a sweep. If a Glendale chimney only needs a sweep, the notes will say that, and nothing more gets sold. A sound firebox and a flue that can take a liner are the starting points for an insert.

What to have ready when you call

  • - Photos of the fireplace opening and the surround
  • The type of insert you are thinking about
  • Whether the fireplace has a gas line nearby
  • How you use the fireplace now
  • A window for the fit-check visit
